Where Are They Now? — Derek Dennis

I also have enjoyed reading what everyone has been doing and thought I would put in my two cents.

After graduation I went to Ricks College for a year doing the track thing and getting very little out of my classes. I then went to Italy for a couple of years on a mission, which was incredible. When I returned I didn’t know what to do with myself since old man geezer decided to ravage my ankles and I completely lost my hops. I ended up down in Cedar City at SUU taking general education classes and thinking seriously about what I was going to do for employment. I had surgery to remove some bone spurs off my ankles and in the process learned how cool anesthesia was. I decided I wanted to be a gas passer and put people to sleep for a living. So I left Cedar City with my beautiful wife Stacia and went to Weber State followed by the University of North Dakota. Leaving North Dakota with the addition of two wonderful boys, Hunter and Hayden, we moved to Boise, Idaho. We still live here in Boise and think it is the best place in the world to raise kids. Abbie, our little girl joined us and the five of us are enjoying life. I work for Anesthesia Associates of Boise which contracts services with St. Lukes Hospital. It’s a great gig being a nurse anesthetist. I make the ladies happy taking away labor pain with epidurals and putting people of all ages and sizes to sleep for surgery. Like many of you our lives are governed to a large extent by the activities of our children. We are constantly on the go from one thing to another and when we catch a break we go visit family in Utah. It was fortunate that the class reunion is going to happen at the same time we are to be down and I look forward to seeing all of you.

Memories of school and most of you have significantly faded. I have only seen a handful of fellow classmates after graduation and no one in a long time. This web site has churned up many great memories which include; Singing Pink Floyd songs while jogging around the track with Kenneth Nelson and Lance Benzley, laughing at almost everything Rob McKay said, watching Sean Walker almost get a strike in a lane two over from his own, playing basketball against the PHS girls team for practice, being in seventh heaven holding Karen Olson’s hand, getting yelled at by coach Henderson who did not like the tunes we were blasting over the PA system during track practice, long bus rides to sporting events, beating Timp at football, seeing Hema Heimuli plow over people at football games, going to dances, Lois Decker in shorts (WOW), Matt Rollins draining three pointers, running across the street for lunch with Jason Clements at the Polynesian place, hanging out on the heaters, going to assemblies, being number two at the State Track meet, and the list goes on . See ya!

Hi Derek - Sounds like life has been good to you. You look great! I can totally relate to your field of work, having been a circulator for a few years. I love that area, probably my most favorite in nursing. And, I'm glad you're going to make it to the reunion, it will get great to see you.

Hey Big AWESOME!!!

Do your kids know that their dad was the best athlete in our high school? No? Probably because you are too humble to tell them. It is GREAT to read how you are doing! You mentioned coming in second our senior year in track. That was a life-changing event for me and you played a monster role in it - I can't wait to catch up.

Hello Derek,

how could anyone forget all that awesome curly hair and infectious smile.

It's good to hear things are going well for you and your family.

You are right about your job. Being a hero to all of us women is exactly what you are when you walk into the hospital room. And I would like to thank you for what you do. I love all you guys.

I look forward to seeing you in a couple of weeks.

Hey Derek! How could you fail to mention winning stake basketball and playing D&D over at Danny Mullins' house while we listened to Def Leppard?!? Looking forward to catching up with you at the reunion.

Derek it's good to see you alive and kicking. I don't think any of us track bums will ever forget missing the state championship by such a small margin. My youngest brother Jamey is in the same field as you at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. It will be nice to catch up. See you soon.

Derek,
Talk about legs. Do remember that your legs were all muscle? I guess that's why you could run the 300 hurdles and not fall like me. Sorry about the ankle problems. Isn't it the pits to start falling apart? Glad your life is giving you what you deserve.
Best,
Lois Decker (Brown)
