Where Are They Now? — Vicki Thompson (O'Brien)

I have LOVED reading about everyone from the class of 1988. It makes me really feel like it was just yesterday, and not 20 years ago. Here's my story . . .
I got a job at Nu Skin right out of high school. Rusty (PHS class of 1987) worked there and got me on as part of a master plan to make me wait for him while he was on his mission. I also started school at UVSC and then transferred to BYU while I diligently "waited" for Rusty to serve his mission to Caracas, Venezuela. We got married in April 1993 (just had our 15th anniversary). I stayed at Nu Skin for a total of seven years, working as Assistant to the Vice President of Distribution, until we both graduated from BYU (me with a BS in Psychology and Rusty in International Relations) and moved to Louisville, Kentucky for him to attend law school. Because of family ties, and having spent half of his childhood in St. Louis, he wanted to return to the Midwest.
Being in Louisville is a completely different experience than growing up and going to college in my/our little hometown of Provo. When I first arrived I really thought I was in a "foreign land." I quickly realized I had to learn the language – "y'all" (all of you), "meemaw/papaw" (Grandma/Grandpa), "dinner" (lunch), "supper" (dinner), "getting your picture made" (taking a picture), Thunder Over Louisville (huge pre-derby firework and air show—not a rain cloud) "fixin ta" going to do something, "The Final Four" (we're in college basketball territory), and "git 'er done" (accomplishing something). But now that I know the language and am used to all the "Louisvillisms" I totally love living here.
One of the best events of our lives happened during law school. I was told that most likely I could never have a baby, so we decided to adopt through LDS Social Services. We figured it would take a long time to get a baby, but it took 9 months to the day that we turned in our papers. We got our oldest daughter, Meg (now 10), from Wichita, Kansas. Eleven months later we had our second child Ben--9 (with a name like O'Brien of course we needed to have "Irish twins"). Three years later came Sam--6, and then Molly—almost 3 (I guess the doctor who diagnosed me was wrong). Our last two also followed the Irish theme by having bright red hair.
I, like many of our graduating class, am a "stay-at-home" mom, and love it! These days I'm "staying at home" just long enough to try to potty train Molly (give me strength!); the rest of my day is spent at baseball, swim team, ballet/dance, volunteering at school, working in Cub Scouts. I also like to run, bike and travel with Rusty. Rusty graduated from law school in 1998 and has been practicing immigration law here in Louisville ever since. There isn't an ethnic restaurant in town that our family hasn't eaten at free (with a family our size we need all the "freebies" we can get). Rusty became a partner last year and it looks like he will take over the joint in three more years, which means we're pretty much staying put. We'll be on a work trip to Vancouver in June so we'll unfortunately miss the reunion. But, if any of you would like to see the Kentucky Derby, "get your picture made" by the biggest baseball bat in the world (at the Louisville Slugger factory), or just see beautiful horse farms and tobacco fields as far the eye can see, My Old Kentucky Home is open. Please drop us a line and y'all come visit.

So good to see the pictures of your family and to read what you and Rusty are up to! We get updates from Andy and Steph on how you two are doing, but we'll have to keep in better touch. Crazy how busy things get! I know Darcy will miss seeing you at the reunion, too. Let us know when you are coming out next!
Talk to you soon,
Lance
Sorry I won't get to see you at the reunion. Perhaps it's for the best, though. I don't speak your language, so I would just look at you with a dumb -- but impressed and interested -- stare while you say that yer fixin' ta get sumthin' cold ta wet yer whistle. I do understand "y'all," though. That's a Texas thang, too.
Yes I remember the TP, as well as many other great things. I also remember you turning me down for the Mister Mister concert while Rusty was on his mission. I am still heartbroken over that.
You and the family look great. Tell Rusty hi.
Drop me a line sometime.

You and your family look great!
It's nice to hear from you and see what you and Rusty have been up to. I have good memories of you laughing with me (or at me - I like to think of it as with me). We will miss you at the reunion. Tell Rusty I said hello.
It's okay if you two want ot start aging now. You still look like you're 12. Hey, whatever to happened to "Oh, we will move back as soon as Rusty is done with school?" It's been like 12 years- how is school going? Just kidding, you guys look great. We'd love to see you next time you are in Utah.
Thanks for the nice things you said. I keep thinking about Jr. High and what I was like there and how your friendship and a couple other peoples friendship got me on the right path. What a great influence you had in my life. Thanks for sticking with me.
I was great to see you and your family in April. Hope to see you soon.
So great to read the update. Great life. Great family. You look amazing. Just reading what you wrote brought back so many memories! I'm so glad you've had such a great life. Well deserved!
You look so good. What a darling family.
I enjoyed your friendship throughout Wasatch, Dixon and PHS.
You look great. For some reason I always remember that your bday is November 25th. I'm not sure why I remember that, maybe it's because it's 4 days before mine and I got tired of Mrs. Standsfield, Miss Tueller, Miss Virgin, Miss Jorgensen, Mr. Anderson, Mrs. Jenkins and Mrs. Hill all making a bigger deal out of your bday than mine!
We'll miss you at the reunion.

Hey!! When I saw your profile I thought to myself that I could now live life to the fullest. I'm really happy that life is treating you well. I don't know how you get by in the humidity. I live in Arizona where we don't know what humidity is. I couldn't do it with my hair!! Just kidding. I am sorry I won't see you at the reunion. It looks as though it should be fun. Take care. I still remember asking you out with a piece of wood on your doorstep. Did you save it!!

You finally posted. Now we just need to pressure Jenni into putting hers up. By the way, did you check your picture out under the PHS: Halls of Love. You had amazing hair. I've always tried to keep up with that mane you have; but I have never been about to. It was great seeing you last month. We should email more, or do something more. It's just crazy how busy life is. Right now, it's all I can do to get my four kids to swimming lessons.
Talk to you soon (seriously),
Lois
It is great to see that you have been blessed with such a beautiful family. I can tell that you have likely steered clear of White Castles (or maybe they don't have them in KY, just St. Louis). We enjoyed the midwest during our stay there. I am disappointed that you won't make it to the reunion, but I enjoyed reading your blog.
Erik
I miss you!!!
I relate to all of your "southern" indoctination. I've been in Florida now longer than I was in Utah. We live to close to not keep in touch. Your family is beautiful!! The red hair was bound to come out sooner or later.
Email me, I would love to get in touch again Bloyd1@tampabay.rr.com

What a darling family you have. I remember you tried so hard to become a rebel, but it just wasn't in you. You are just to sweet of a girl. I do have a lot of good memories though. I am glad to see how happy you are. Keep in touch ..Sharmel
