Where Are They Now? — Rob McKay

Wow - 20 years come and gone! It seems more than a lifetime ago that we were in high school, but it has been a lot of fun to read what folks have been up to.

As for me, after graduation, I ran cross country and track at Weber State and then served a mission in Germany. The Berlin Wall fell while I was there, which made for an exciting and interesting time. When I got home from my mission, I attended BYU, where I married Lynae Bidstrup from Idaho Falls (the one in Idaho). We've been married for 16 years and have, yep, you're right, 4 children: Andy (14--a freshman in high school--he's named after Andy Andrus, someone with whom I still keep in touch and greatly admire), Grace (9 going on 19. Tough as nails and probably a future corporate raider. My favorite quote from this week: "That's just how things are gonna be, Dad, so get with the program."), Rose (7--she's a little St. Francis--every animal within one mile of our house has been given sanctuary in her room at one time or another) and Shannon (3--a complete girlie-girl--she already has her summer wardrobe chosen--it's all pink, but you had probably already guessed that). After the last 12 years, we are extremely happy that the diaper-changing era of our lives is over. Can I get an AMEN!?!?

After graduating from BYU, we moved to New York City where I attended Columbia Law School. After law school, we moved to Washington, D.C. where I practiced corporate law and worked on international transactions and had the opportunity to spend some time abroad (mostly in Europe--I've got a cool story about how we got a flat in London, but I'll spare sharing it here because my wife rolls her eyes each time I tell it--my wife told me once that when she rolls her eyes, she is just thinking about how much she loves me. She must think about how much she loves me a lot.). We are still living in suburban Washington, D.C. and I'm working in-house for an energy company where I'm responsible for mergers and acquisitions and corporate law issues. I'm also teaching corporate law at the University of Maryland Law School.

Between family, church, work and teaching, my wife and I don't have much time for anything except the occasional night out. My wife is president of our neighborhood co-op and I spend most of my evenings writing, shuttling kids to activities and helping with homework (homework is easier the second time around--actually, this may be the first time around because I don't remember doing homework in school.). Weekends are primarily devoted to swim meets, karate, cleaning the house, doing laundry and hiding with my kids from my wife so we don't have to do chores in the yard. I'm still running and swimming regularly and I'm hoping to finally qualify for the Boston Marathon this year (I missed the qualifying time by just a a few minutes the last 4 years in a row--aaarrrgh!).

My wife and I have been teaching early morning seminary in our basement to 15 high school students (including our son) for the last couple of years and we love it. We remind them on a regular basis that high school is an important place to learn from mistakes, but that life gets much better. I tell them stories of about my screw ups in high school (and there were many--so very, very many) and that usually makes them feel better about themselves (I'm not quite sure how I feel about that).

I look forward to seeing you all at the end of June!

It's so good to hear that things are going well for you. Do you remember when we were in Berlin when the wall was still up? Pretty scary -huh? Can't wait to see you.

Rob, are you wearing a yarmulke (sp?) in that picture with your wife? Not that there's anything wrong with that. You were an awesome MC at the Mr. Provo pageant assembly. Very funny!

Rob, I remember clearly the day our senior year when you politely invited me to join the Young Democrats. When I equally politely declined, you growled, "Damn Republican." You made me cry. Now *those* were the days.

Rob, missing Boston by a few minutes 4 years in a row is my curse on you for bumping me from the state finals in x-country when you got back from Germany and then having a bad race on top of it (even though it was really Coach Lowe's fault). Take that! And by the way, it's AWESOME. I'll be sure and wear my jacket and shirt and go on and on and on about it at reunion for you.

Dearest Rob,
You were always my first love. I can't believe you could say such a thing. I would never run around with my clothes off, I was always a very good girl. What a blessing Alzheimer's must be in your life. Please Tell Lynae hello for me. She married one of the best. What great kids you have, I hope they take after Lynae. Can't wait to see you and your family.

Rob! I finally tracked you down. Now we can open that restaurant we planned out when we were at Dixon. McJoneses! And I know how to find you in DC. Just look for the house with sign pointing to it that says "Dip".

Hey Rob- It's your little sis. Becky. Wow, you sound like you are almost normal on your bio. I know the truth however. Your family looks lovely and you almost look handsome, almost. I have a facebook; take a look. It's nice to see you even in a picture.

Cheer,
Becky

Hi Rob! I have so many fond memories of you, mostly during Jr. High but I had a blast hanging out with you when I was at Sheryl's house. Actually, I was spending time with her so I could be close to you, but don't tell her that =D See you at the reunion!

Rob - I bet I can talk Chad in wearing the saphire blue Zoot suit to the reunion dinner - and yes, my husband and maybe Bill Duke are the only ones who could pull it off- Believe it or not we had it custom made for Chad.

Rob, remember when you pushed me out of the swing in 2nd grade and I broke my arm? That really wasn't very nice of you. I'll always remember us needing a goalie for a water polo game and you jumped in the car and came with us to play and you never had played before. You're the man. See you in a few weeks.

Rob,

It does not surprise me that you have the most comments I have seen. You have a way with people. And I never would have spiked you on purpose (unless you had done something totally annoying.) You look great.
Best,

It was so fun to spend a little time with you. I'm still shocked to you were just a country block away from us and we didn't even know it. Hopefully we'll see you again soon and if you come to Blackfoot again, let us know. We could do a "couples night". :)

Rob I sure appreciate your comments to me. I feel silly that Amy talked about my comments on here. I don't think I did anything different than anyone else. I so wanted to see y'all and am hoping it isn't another 10 yrs before I can do so. I already told my husband that he IS going with me to the next reunion. I don't care what else happens. Shoot, we live so close to eachother it's silly if we don't catch up sometime. I still am very embarrassed that my comments on here were such a big deal, but thank you so much for making me feel so special.

Did you and Lenae name your kids after both your best friends? Andy and Shannon?
